Sleep Problems, Part 1

Part 1

Hello. I'm Marina Santee. And I'm Elizabeth Lickiss. Welcome to Spotlight. This programme uses a special English method of broadcasting. It is easier for people to understand, no matter where in the world they live.

Today's Spotlight is on Sleep Problems. It is the middle of the night. The baby is crying for another feed. I wonder how many parents around the world awoke to hear a noise like that last night. Young babies need food day and night. Some parents have to go on getting up in the night for many weeks. When people are very tired it can be hard for them to do their work well. And it can be hard to remain happy.

But the sleep problem should go away as the baby grows older. By about twelve weeks of age, many babies start sleeping through the night. Life begins to return to normal and everyone feels better.

To feel well, most people need to sleep for seven or eight hours each night. It is possible to survive on much less for short periods of time. But our health soon suffers if we try to do without enough sleep for very long. But what happens if you just cannot sleep? Some people go to bed early. They lie down and close their eyes. But sleep will not come. Or other people go to sleep easily. But then they awake many times in the night. Or they awake very early in the morning. And they cannot sleep any more. These situations are worrying if they go on night after night.
