Part 7 - Rivendell
Rivendell
“It lay in a deep valley in the western foothills of the Misty Mountains, and endured, under the protection of Elrond's Ring Vilya, until the War of the Ring and beyond. This place is the House of Elrond, known to Middle-Earth as Rivendell.” - The Fellowship of the Ring
Yes, thanks to our good friends, Jayme and I were given a tour of the Kaitoke Regional Park, where Rivendell was filmed in the Lord of the Rings films - located in Hutt Valley, just outside Wellington.
As a lot of you know, I was a Tolkien freak long before the movies even came out - so this was a wonderful treat! It was exactly how I imagined Rivendell would be. There was a sharp cool wind, that seemed to be filled with sweet, sweet air. The birds were singing their beautiful lullabies, while Jayme and I roamed deep in the forest, touching 100 year old trees as we passed. Occasionally, there would be a break within the forest, only to reveal massive waterfalls, falling down the cliffs below.
I began to feel the spirit of the nerd awaken inside me. I felt as though I could run through the forest at top speed, slaying the orcs and riding my noble steed. I could feel the magic of the elvish kingdom. Then I blinked, and saw Jayme smiling at me and my child-like imagination. I was not in Rivendell or Middle-Earth, just the closest thing. It's a good thing to, because I'm pretty sure that if I saw an orc in real life I'd wet myself. Fortunately, very few people were even in the park, which gave it an even more Middle-Earthy feel. We had a wonderful time! Thanks David!
