What's New at the Linguist, January 2007

There haven't been many changes to the site in the last month but we have been making progress on our new system. I know, I know you've all heard that before, but let me explain. When we originally began developing our new system we decided to make it a desktop client, meaning an application that would run on your computer. This would come in the form of a download that you would install on your machine. Much of the functionality and data storage would occur on your computer with only occasional synchronization with our server required.

There were a number of reasons for this, which I won't go into, but as we progressed on the development of this system we began to realize that the desktop interface and usability were not going to be as good as we had hoped. In fact, in some ways we preferred our present system, or at least its interface.

Therefore we recently made the difficult decision to stop development of our desktop application in favour of building a new web based application. What this means is that we are now working on building a new system, much more similar in structure to our present system, that will be delivered through the web. I have to admit, as we see it take shape, that this new web based system seems to be better than the desktop application in almost every way. Not the least of which is the speed of development.

We now feel that we will have a Beta version within a month which we would hope to launch a month after that. Having said that, we will be looking for Beta testers to test our new system shortly. Let us know if you would like to be a Beta tester, for English or for any other languages!
