Your Language Adventure, Part 8

Part 8

Unfortunately there are many words to know. You may recognize 3000 or 4000 words or even more. But you may have trouble using them correctly. A university educated native speaker of English may know 50,000 words, but you need not learn so many. However, you may need to know how to recognize and even use 10,000 words. This can appear a difficult task. LingQ can help you learn these words if you continue using the system.

Just continue listening, reading and linking, but start to do so more extensively. In the beginning you would listen to 3 minutes of content over and over again. Now you need to listen to and read longer texts. Now you can no longer afford to listen to or read the same text as often. You have to cover more ground. You will move on to more and more new texts. LingQ guides you in selecting content with the appropriate number of new words.

The Linguist Library also indicates the number of words from the Academic Word List that are contained in a given content item. This list, developed by Paul Nation of New Zealand, is important for most advanced writing and for preparing for tests like TOEFL and TOEIC.

If you are familiar with European languages, the meaning of various Latin and Greek origin words in English will already be known to you. If you are from a non-European language group, it could be useful to notice these common roots to many academic words in English. LingQ helps you do this.

When you submit writing for correction in LingQ , we will not only measure the nature of your mistakes and frequency of mistakes, we will also measure the richness of the vocabulary you use. Remember that a rich vocabulary will increase the accuracy of your word choice.

At LingQ we put great emphasis on vocabulary acquisition using our linking method. We constantly measure the number of words you know. We know this is an effective guide of your level of language proficiency. The statistics generated by LingQ will help you track your progress towards fluency.

If you have no goals it is impossible to know if you have achieved your objectives. When you join LingQ you are asked to set a clear goal in terms of vocabulary size. By measuring your vocabulary level and your regular acquisition of new vocabulary, we can give you a clear indication of your progress towards that goal.
